Neros, city’s only restaurant with in-house Sommelier, wins 7th Consecutive Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence

Windsor, ON – Caesars Windsor’s signature, fine dining restaurant, Neros Steakhouse, has earned its 7th consecutive Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2015, making it one of only two restaurants in the city to earn recognition from one of the world’s foremost guides for wine lovers, collectors and connoisseurs. This is the most consecutive wins for a Windsor restaurant. There were 2,560 Award of Excellence winners worldwide who met the criteria.

To qualify for Wine Spectator Magazine’s Award of Excellence, a restaurant’s wine list must offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Typically, these lists offer at least 100 selections. Neros’ extensive wine list features over 1,000 bottles representing dozens of countries and 400 labels.

The restaurant’s spectacular, glass enclosed wine cellar is curated by the city’s only in-house certified sommelier, Renee Nantais. She recently joined the award-winning restaurant earlier this year bringing with her 20 years of service industry experience, a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for sharing her love of wine.

Nantais said, “I was thrilled to hear that Neros has sustained our winning streak. It means that I’ve got some big shoes to fill in terms of maintaining the integrity of our wine list, but I already knew that the moment that I saw it. It’s a great incentive to continue offering a variety of wines from differing regions as opposed to simply focusing on best sellers.”

She does not like to use the word ‘educate’ to describe her relationship with guests. “My role is to inspire and pique guests’ curiousity and interest about wine,” Nantais explained. “I encourage them to try new things and not to be intimidated about the wide variety and selection available.”

A sommelier is a certified wine professional who specializes in all aspects of wine service, working closely with the Chef de Cuisine and/or Executive Chef to create an exquisite wine selection that will pair well with the restaurant’s menu. Nantais acts as a tour guide, navigating both avid, self-described connoisseurs and adventurous amateurs.

Nantais enjoys sharing her knowledge about the effects a region and climate have on wine and tries to steer people away from just a brand name and price. “People like consistency and tend to stick to what they know. They believe the more they pay, the better the wine and that’s not necessarily true. There are lovely up-and-coming, obscure regional wines that guests can get an incredible value because they are not well known.”

“The beauty of wine is there is such wide diversity from around the globe. You may have it one year and never have it again. My job is to assist our guests in exploring new wines so they are confident in their selection and aren’t intimidated by the many variables that make a wine unique,” she said.

Neros Steakhouse is open at 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday. Complimentary valet is available to dining guests at the Riverside Entrance, just steps from the restaurant.
