Horseshoe Casino Baltimore today announced an agreement with Charm City Cakes to provide the $442 million gaming entertainment facility’s guests with the type of delectable desserts that launched the hit series “Ace of Cakes.” Remington-based Charm City Cakes will provide a wide array of baked goods, experiences and merchandise to Horseshoe Baltimore guests when the casino opens on Aug. 26.
At Jack Binion’s Steakhouse, one of the casino’s three premium dining venues, Charm City Cakes will offer a wide range of custom desserts, including a variety of 10-inch buttercream cakes, decorated six-inch cakes, cupcakes and cake jars. In the casino’s multi-purpose room, Charm City Cakes will provide event-specific desserts available by special order; the company will also treat guests to a variety of exceptional baked goods during select events held on the casino’s outdoor entertainment plaza.
Duff Goldman, owner of Charm City Cakes and star of the “Ace of Cakes” show that his business inspired, will make appearances at Horseshoe Baltimore and at times participate in the demonstrations, VIP tours and other events featuring Charm City Cakes at Horseshoe Baltimore.

Executives of Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, the $442 million entertainment facility that will extend the city’s tourism district south from the famed Inner Harbor and renowned sports stadiums, today announced the casino will celebrate its grand opening on the night of Aug. 26, 2014 pending regulatory approval. Timing and event details will be shared at a later date.
“After more than two years of planning and construction, we’re excited to unveil our world-class casino – and Baltimore’s next great attraction – on August 26,” said Horseshoe Baltimore Senior Vice President and General Manager Chad Barnhill. “Featuring 122,000 square feet of premier gaming space, two celebrity chef restaurants, innovative live entertainment venues, the industry’s best player loyalty program and Maryland’s only World Series of Poker Circuit tournaments, Horseshoe Baltimore will offer a truly exceptional gaming experience.”
Horseshoe Baltimore will feature 2,500 video lottery terminals and more than 100 table games, plus a 25-seat World Series of Poker-branded poker room. The full-service casino will employ some 1,700 team members committed to providing the industry’s best customer service.
In addition to the casino industry’s best games, Horseshoe Baltimore will be home to two celebrity chef restaurants: Johnny Sánchez, a spirited taqueria that will be the first collaboration between renowned culinary masters John Besh and Aarón Sánchez; and Guy Fieri’s Baltimore Kitchen & Bar, which will bring the signature style of the chef, restaurateur, Emmy Award winning host and New York Times bestselling author to Charm City.
The casino will feature a third premium dining venue, Jack Binion’s Steakhouse, named for the gaming industry pioneer who made Horseshoe a nationally recognized casino brand. A staple of Horseshoe casinos throughout the country, Jack Binion’s Steakhouse features a menu replete with prime steaks, seafood and pork chops – all freshly prepared and complemented by an extensive wine list with special reserve vintages.
Rounding out the casino’s dining options are Ruby 8 Noodle and Sushi Bar, featuring authentic Asian dishes in a contemporary environment prepared under the supervision of Master Executive Chef Kai Lam; and the Baltimore Marketplace, a collection of several popular restaurant concepts operated by celebrated local restaurateurs that together will comprise the casino’s casual dining experience.
Horseshoe Baltimore will also feature several nightlife options, including its signature 14forty Bar – the only bar in Charm City that will serve drinks around the clock, seven days a week. Horseshoe Casino Baltimore today announced that Ruby 8 Noodle and Sushi Bar will be added to the casino’s extensive lineup of restaurant concepts. Featuring authentic Asian dishes in a contemporary environment just steps from the gaming floor, Ruby 8 will offer gourmet quality cuisine, made-to-order and served quickly.
Ruby 8 will offer flavors straight from China, Vietnam and Korea. The menu will also include beef chow fun, roasted duck, lobster with scallions and spicy pork as well as an array of fresh sushi prepared with local seafood. The noodle bar will serve a variety of soups made fresh daily and featuring homemade broth and fresh grilled meats.

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore today announced a lineup of nightlife venues that will provide guests with a variety of dynamic entertainment experiences when the casino opens this August. The signature 14forty, named for the number of minutes in a day, will be Baltimore’s only bar serving up cocktails around the clock. In addition, B’More Beers and The Twisted Yard will offer a wide-ranging selection of drinks just steps from the action on the casino floor.

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore today announced the five area restaurants that together will comprise the property’s extensive casual dining experience. The Baltimore Marketplace, located on the first floor of Horseshoe Baltimore, will consist of Heavy Seas, the Mallow Bar, Tark’s at the ‘Shoe, Lenny’s Deli and Pie-Zetta.
“We’re pleased to bring several of the area’s most popular restaurateurs together to create the Baltimore Marketplace, a collection of great casual dining venues for our guests to enjoy,” said Horseshoe Baltimore Vice President of Food and Beverage Robert Viox. “Our Baltimore Marketplace concept will feature a full range of flavors and fare. By bringing these area restaurants into the casino, we are creating a unique venue that incorporates great companies that will be familiar to many of our guests.”
Heavy Seas, founded by prominent local brewer Hugh Sisson, offers a bevy of well-balanced and interesting beers as well as some of the best casual fare in the area – from burgers to mussels to ham hush puppies. Sisson, who for 23 years has co-hosted a weekly radio show on Maryland’s NPR network, is an acknowledged expert in the art of food and beer pairings and brings his passion for great food to Horseshoe Baltimore.
The Mallow Bar, founded by Baltimore Farmers’ Market regular Nikki Lewis, is a self-described “crispy treat dessert café,” offering a large selection of their flagship item, Mallow Crunchies (artisan crispy treats) and Mallow Softies (handmade marshmallow). The Mallow Bar will feature gourmet specialty coffees and additional dessert offerings including pastries, pies and gelato, many from local producers.
Tark’s at the ‘Shoe is modeled on the traditional American bistro, with an emphasis on chicken specialties and local seafood favorites. Tark’s specialty items include jumbo lump crab cakes, fried chicken, fresh-cut French fries and soups made daily.
Lenny’s Deli has been feeding Baltimore-area residents since 1985. With three locations – in Harborplace, on Lombard Street and in Owings Mills – Lenny’s is the place to go for the ultimate corned beef sandwich, pastrami, hot dogs and all your deli favorites, as well as, all day breakfast offerings.
Mamma Ilardo’s is the fastest-growing pizza-by-the-slice chain, and at Horseshoe Baltimore the company will be introducing a new concept called Pie-Zetta, where guests can custom order a personal pizza. Founded in 1976, the company now operates 54 restaurants in 16 states. The Towson-based business was recently named of the “Hot 100 Pizza Companies” in the annual listing by Pizza Today magazine. Horseshoe Casino Baltimore today announced the world-class casino entertainment facility will feature a restaurant concept by chef, restaurateur, Emmy Award winning TV Host, and NY Times Best-Selling Author Guy Fieri. Fieri will introduce Guy Fieri’s Baltimore Kitchen & Bar in conjunction with the casino’s opening later this year.

Guy Fieri’s Baltimore Kitchen & Bar will offer guests a taste of Fieri’s signature cuisine, featuring bold flavors and unique twists on traditional dishes. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night dining, the 350-seat restaurant will offer a delicious blend of casual foods, including an extensive variety of burgers, wings, small bites and shareable food items.
“I’ve been to Baltimore many times – it’s an amazing city filled with fun-loving people who appreciate great food,” Fieri said. “I’m looking forward to bringing this exciting new restaurant concept to Horseshoe Baltimore and to making more friends in Charm City as we serve up a fantastic menu in an environment where people can feel free to have a great time.”
The restaurant’s extensive drink menu will feature up to 16 draft beers as well as multiple craft beer options in addition to the Sonoma County wine selection and a frozen tap system shot bar that will create a one-of-a-kind experience for guests. Instead of having shots strained or mixed with ice, which run the risk of getting diluted, the frozen tap system bar will dispense eight different shots straight out of iced dispensers.
The restaurant will feature an outdoor patio and dining area. The cooking space will include a metal, tile and wood theme that closely resembles Fieri’s kitchen at home. The interior design will feature an open arrangement with wood and steel elements along with repurposed materials. Fieri’s famous tattoos are also incorporated as part of the design elements throughout the restaurant and bar, including coasters, napkins and dishware.

Chefs John Besh and Aarón Sánchez today announced that they will open their first restaurant collaboration, Johnny Sánchez, inside the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore when the property opens this summer.
Johnny Sánchez is the inaugural restaurant collaboration of two old friends known for their world-class cuisine and prominent roles on popular television programs. John and Aarón, each of whom has been recognized with some of the culinary world’s most coveted awards, met years ago when Aarón began his career in New Orleans, working for legendary chef Paul Prudhomme. Later, the chefs’ paths crossed again while competing on the first season of Food Network’s “Next Iron Chef.” Since then, the two have become great friends and each has lit up the culinary scene by utilizing his unique talents and skills to entertain and educate the country about shared passions: food, drink, and hospitality.
John, who operates 10 acclaimed restaurants, was named one of the “Top 10 Best New Chefs in America” by Food & Wine and has won the prestigious James Beard Award for the Best Chef of the Southeast. He will be inducted in the James Beard “Who’s Who” in 2014. His New Orleans flagship restaurant, August, is a Gayot Top 40 Restaurant and a Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Restaurant, in addition to being named a 2012 and 2013 James Beard nominee for Outstanding National Restaurant. Maryland Ranks Third State in Nation for LEED Green Building Per Capita
USGBC releases the Top 10 States for LEED in 2014
Washington, D.C. — (Feb. 4, 2015) — Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released its annual ranking of the Top 10 States in the nation for LEED, the world’s most widely used and recognized green building rating system, with the state of Maryland placing third.
The per-capita list highlights states throughout the country that are making impactful strides in sustainable building design, construction and transformation. LEED-certified spaces use less energy and water resources, save money for families, businesses and taxpayers, reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
“Every story about a green building is a story about people,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “USGBC’s annual recognition of the Top 10 States for LEED goes beyond gross square feet or number of projects and factors in LEED’s potential in a given state to be part of the daily life of the state’s residents. This per-capita approach tells a great story about how LEED has become an important benchmark in the transformation of the nation’s built environment. LEED certified buildings and the innovations they have driven contribute substantially to our national economic growth, create jobs and improve the quality of life in the communities where they are found. We commend the business and community leaders, policy makers and green building professionals in each of these states for making the commitment to create a healthier, more sustainable future.

The per-capita list is based on 2010 U.S. Census data and includes commercial and institutional green building projects that were certified throughout 2014. Maryland certified 132 projects representing 15,583,423 square feet of real estate, or 2.70 square feet per resident, in 2014.
USGBC calculates the list using per-capita figures as a measure of the human element of green building, allowing for a fair comparison of the level of green building taking place among states with significant differences in population and, accordingly, number of overall buildings.
"Maryland's continued inclusion in this Top 10 list is a great reflection of our state's commitment to green building, and the broader issues related to promoting a healthy environment for our local communities," said Sabrina Harder, executive director, USGBC Maryland Chapter. “We look forward to continuing our work and building on this momentum in the year to come."

Collectively, 1,662 commercial and institutional projects became LEED certified within the top 10 states in 2014, representing 251.7 million square feet of real estate. Worldwide, 4,502 projects were certified in 2014, representing 675.7 million square feet.
More than 26,600 projects representing 3.6 billion square feet of space have been LEED-certified to date, with another 42,000 projects representing 8.8 billion square feet in the pipeline for certification. USGBC launched LEED v4, the newest version of the rating system, in the fall of 2013. The latest version continues to raise the bar for the entire green building industry, which Forbes Magazine projects could be worth up to $960 billion globally by 2023. LEED v4 features increased technical rigor; new market sector adaptations for data centers, warehouses and distribution centers, hospitality, existing schools, existing retail and midrise residential projects; and a simplified submittal process supported by a robust and intuitive technology platform.

BALTIMORE (April 29, 2015) – Baltimore, it’s time to get your cake on and support a worthy cause.
Duff Goldman, owner of Charm City Cakes and star of the Food Network’s “Duff Till Dawn,” “Kids Baking Championship” and “Ace of Cakes,” is taking his relationship with Horseshoe Casino Baltimore to a new level in support of Kennedy Krieger Institute. Already providing custom desserts at one of the casino’s three premium dining venues – Jack Binion’s Steak – the Baltimore entrepreneur and his team are putting together a cake display of 25 prominent local landmarks that will be available for purchase at the casino as part of a May 8 auction.
Charm City Buy the Slice will feature display cakes of landmarks ranging from the Horseshoe Baltimore Casino to Harbor Place to Pimlico Race Course. The cakes will be on display May 7-18 outside Jack Binion’s Steak on the first level of Horseshoe Baltimore. Winning bidders at the May 8 auction will receive identical cakes specially made following the conclusion of the fundraiser.

Goldman and Horseshoe Casino Baltimore Senior Vice President and General Manager Chad Barnhill will kick off the fundraiser May 8 at 11:30 a.m. by cutting into a Horseshoe Baltimore cake and serving up slices to dozens of guests who make a donation of at least $1 to Kennedy Krieger.
“We’re pleased to be working with Duff and his team to contribute to the groundbreaking work being performed at Kennedy Krieger,” said Barnhill. “Our team believes in giving back to the community, and this event represents a unique way to bring people together in support of an exceptional cause.”
