The R&B legend got her start in the group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, which later became Labelle. Labelle’s 1974 hit, “Lady Marmalade” took the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. Selling more than a million copies, “Lady Marmalade” is the group’s most successful single to date.

LaBelle went solo and had a slew of popular singles. Her single, “The Best Is Yet To Come” got LaBelle her first Grammy Award nomination. LaBelle’s 1983 album “I’m In Love Again” had her first Top 10 R&B singles like “If Only You Knew” and “Love, Need And Want You.” The following year, she contributed to the “Beverly Hills Cop” soundtrack with dance hits “New Attitude” and “Stir It Up.”

In 1986, she released her best-selling solo album “Winner In You” which featured songs like “On My Own,” “Oh People” and “If You Asked Me To.” Her gold-selling 1991 album “Burnin’” had multiple R&B hits. She won her first Grammy Award in the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1992. LaBelle had another Grammy Award win for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for “Live! One Night Only” in 1999.

Thirty years after the release of “Lady Marmalade,” the song was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.
